Asunto: [ICAN] Join the Nuclear Truth Project in conversation about Nuclear Waste: May 20/21
Fecha: 14 de mayo de 2024, 4:49:03 CEST
Para: ICAN campaigners <ican-campaigners@googlegroups.com>

Dear ICAN campaigners

The Nuclear Truth Project is currently running a series of monthly In Conversation meetings. These are discussions about topical nuclear issues that impact on communities across the world.

On May 20/21 (depending on where you are in the world) we will hold our next In Conversation meeting to hear from three anti-nuclear experts in the US, Australia and Fiji on the problems of nuclear waste.

Nuclear waste is a significant problem and an intergenerational burden across all nuclear industries. Whether from the mining of uranium, the manufacturing, testing, or storage of nuclear weapons, to nuclear power and accidents, nuclear waste poses inevitable problems. Particular burdens on Indigenous Peoples, workers, marginalised community members and their precious lands and waters are underrecognised.

Join us as we speak with Tina Colley, Dr Jim Green and Epeli Lesuma on this topical issue in our special session Resisting Radioactivity: Mobilizing Against Nuclear Waste in the USA, Australia and Pacific Islands.

More details and instructions to register are on our webpage here. Some slides to share are attached. Any help in sharing these to your networks would be appreciated.

On June 17/18 the Nuclear Truth Project will hold our next In Conversation meeting about the AUKUS military alliance that is creating significant nuclear strain in the Pacific region. This alliance began with the announcement of Australia being supplied nuclear submarines, but is proving to be far more broad ranging. We will have speakers from Australia, the US, UK and the Pacific to find out more about the implications of this arrangement.
For those interested, see the ICAN Australia report on the problems with the nuclear submarines here, and the recent Counterpunch article on AUKUS by Ray Acheson here.

And on July 15/16, our In Conversation meeting will be a bookclub with Dr Togzhan Kassenova, sharing her book Atomic Steppe: How Kazakhstan Gave up the Bomb. If you would like to join the bookclub event, the author is offering a 20% discount code if bought from the publisher: www.sup.org/books/title/?id=33596 The code is KASSENOVA20. Or see if your local library can loan you a copy!

We hope you can join us for these conversations.
To stay informed, please join the Nuclear Truth Project mailing list via our website here.

Please note: as these meetings are intended as conversations rather than webinars, we are not recording them for later distribution, though we will for the July bookclub. We also do not have the resources to hold multiple sessions across different time zones for each of these conversations. Our apologies if this makes it difficult for some people to join outside of the regions we currently are working in. We are however organising certain workshops to accommodate more time zones later in the year.

with thanks
Nuclear Truth Project team, Pam Kingfisher, Dimity Hawkins and Rico Robertson
