Hi everyone!

This week in London, Sarah Njeri and I will be launching a book we co-edited Global Activism and Humanitarian Disarmament. Professor Mary Kaldor from the London School of Economics and the UN’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters will join us as discussant. We will be hosted by SOAS University of London’s Development Studies department and will be talking about the intersections between humanitarianism, development and conflict as they relate to addressing the legacies of landmines, cluster munitions, small arms, nuclear weapons and autonomous weapons systems.

I hope some of you who are in London will be able to come!

6 MARCH 2024

Book Launch: 'Global Activism and Humanitarian Disarmament' - featuring reflections by Professor Mary Kaldor | Development Studies Seminar Series

Key information

Date: 6 March 2024

Time: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Venue: Brunei Gallery

Room: Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre (BGLT)

The event is to launch the following book: Global Activism and Humanitarian Disarmament; as part of the Development Studies Seminar Series.

This book launch happens in the context of renewed arms races, armed conflicts and booming arms trade. It is also a time when there is a growing threat of the use of nuclear weapons and the use of conventional weapons that are causing devastating civilian harm during protracted armed conflicts and long after these conflicts end. This edited volume showcases interdisciplinary research by scholars and practitioners seeking to understand the dynamics and impact of the new global activism on weapons.

About the panel

Professor Mary Kaldor will serve as a discussant for the launch of this edited volume - Global Activism and Humanitarian Disarmament. She will join the panel in a reflection about, what global activism in humanitarian disarmament has achieved in the past and the challenges ahead.  Prof Kaldor’s reflections will draw on her role as a member of the UN Advisory Board on Disarmament as well as her own civil society activism for disarmament.

Discussant: Professor Mary Kaldor (Director of the Conflict Research Programme, LSE IDEAS)
