Message from our Board regarding Palestine
On November 6th an invitation was shared via the CCC Updates for entities to sign a statement in solidarity of garment workers in Palestine https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11215&qid=298741 . Strong concerns were raised by CCC Germany related to the wording of the statement and the risks and potential negative repercussions for the CCC German National Coalition and its members, that could be the result of CCC global network engagement with the statement. Following this, in its meeting of December 7th, the Strategy Board discussed the matter and discussed how we might or could not go forward as a CCC Global Network. Please find more detailed explanations and the outcome of this discussion here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11227&qid=298741 .
Labour behind the Label also offered to organize an online meeting for CCC members to discuss the actions and commitments outlined in the statement and how our respective organisations can fulfil them. Until the Network consultation process conducted by the Strategy Board is completed this will be at individual level, and with a request to bear in mind the associated risks that public involvement from entities or Coordinating Bodies with “Clean Clothes Campaign” in their name may bring to the German CCC. The meeting will be online, on December 21st, Thursday, 11am UK time. For more information and to participate contact Alena alena@labourbehindthelabel.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11216&qid=298741 or Maya maya@labourbehindthelabel.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11217&qid=298741 .
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence highlights
* On November 27th, Women's Center Sri Lanka rallied at Colombo Fort Railway Station, a symbol of change, to mark the International Day on eliminating all sorts of violence against Women. Watch their video https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11174&qid=298741 commemorating the event. * READ has initiated the women workers' union, Garment and General Workers Union, GAGU. This union is now forming at the community- and garment industry levels. During this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, GAGU leaders and women members raised their demands, with paintings in palms, to insist on “Stop Gender-Based Violence”. Updates
D1: Freedom of Association and the Right to Bargain Collectively
-
D2: Employment Relationship and Social Protection
* The campaign https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11218&qid=298741 around the Urgent Appeal case of unpaid severance at Specialized supplier APS in El Salvador is in full swing! Green America and Labour Behind the Label https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11219&qid=298741 both organised Christmas themed cycling actions to call attention to Specialized's complete failure to engage in the case. Will you help spread the word this week? Here is a toolkit https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11220&qid=298741 with social media materials developed by Green America to share between December 19th-25th. * In the past months CCC Turkey has interviewed 130 workers in the area hit by the devastating earthquake in February about their working and living conditions since. The report is planned to be launched on January 4th. More information on how to participate in the launch or organise a national launch at a later date will become available here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11221&qid=298741 . * Worker Rights Consortium published factory investigation report https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11222&qid=298741 on the Body Fashion factory in Thailand last week. Thanks to Südwind in Austria Die Presse published an extensive article https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11223&qid=298741 about the case (in German).
D3: Living Wages
· FEMNET and ECCHR - in collaboration with NTUF and HBWWF - published a new report on the non-payment of wages in the Pakistani garment industry. Titled "No contracts, no rights: how the fashion industry avoids paying minimum wages in Pakistan", the report shows that out of the 350 workers surveyed, none of them received a living wage, 97% did not have a written employment contract, and 80% did not receive a pay slip. It also highlights the obligations of companies on issues of living wages under the German supply chain law while noting that companies seem to make increasing efforts to address labour rights violations. The report is available here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11176&qid=298741 and the press release (in German) is available here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11177&qid=298741 .
D4: Worker Safety and Health
* The new International Accord, a framework agreement covering country safety programmes in Pakistan and Bangladesh, announced in November, has published its first signatories. By the morning of December 18th, CET, 74 brands had signed the International Accord, 63 signed the Bangladesh programme, and 90 brands had joined the Pakistan Accord. The International Accord updates regularly here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11178&qid=298741 . The CCC International Office has a list here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11179&qid=298741 , including notorious non-signatories. The International Office sent a press release https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11180&qid=298741 to welcome brands that signed and urged brands that have not done so to sign on. * The Accord Campaigning WIG started social media to urge more brands to sign the Accord on December 14th, which was exactly one year after the Pakistan Accord was announced. You can still join in using the social media kit here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11181&qid=298741 . The WIG plans a bigger push in the new year.
D5: Just Transition
* The Democracy at Work Fund https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11182&qid=298741 published a call for proposals prioritising worker-led efforts at the intersection of workers' rights, gender justice, racial justice, and climate justice. The total amount of the fund will be distributed in awards ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 for a project duration of a maximum of two years. The application deadline for this opportunity is January 31st, 2024, at 23:59 hours CST. This is not a call for proposals in which the CCC-IO can take the lead. We would, however, like to invite you to list your interest in the CCC fundraising coordination table https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11183&qid=298741 by Wednesday, December 20th, to seek connections with other entities interested in applying and prevent overlap or discrepancy between different proposals referring to the CCC work. Aleida: aleida@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11184&qid=298741 and Parvathi: parvathi@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11185&qid=298741 are happy to advise or support where they can. They also suggest that you seek advice and input from the Just Transition WIG. The Just Transition discussion paper https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11186&qid=298741 developed by the Just Transition WIG and the OP24 presentation of the JT WIG https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11187&qid=298741 are good sources to use when developing your proposal. * Public Eye published a follow-up article on air cargo at other companies than Zara: Following in Zara’s slipstream: the airborne fashion of other brands https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11188&qid=298741 , also available in DE https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11189&qid=298741 and FR https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11190&qid=298741 . While Inditex clearly leads with its enormous amounts of air cargo, some others also fly a lot. And there are noteworthy differences in the industry, some companies trying to avoid and phase down air cargo. Brands mentioned are H&M, Primark, Bestseller, Fast Retailing, Lululemon, Nike, Adidas, Puma, Victoria’s Secret, and Calzedonia.
D6: Legislation, Regulation and Binding Mechanisms for Corporate Accountability
* EU policymakers finally reached a provisional agreement on the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. While the agreement represents a first step to change irresponsible corporate behaviour and protect rightsholders globally, it leaves open gaps that fall short of its initial ambition. Some issues still need to be agreed upon at the technical level, but the most "controversial" issues around civil liability, climate, and finance were agreed upon, and this is why the different EU institutions decided to announce that an agreement had been reached. Once a final text is published, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament will have to approve it over the next months formally. You can read Clean Clothes Campaign's press release here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11191&qid=298741 . * Registration for the OECD Forum on Due Diligence in the Garment and Footwear Sector is now open. Use this registration link https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11192&qid=298741 . The Forum will take place in Paris on February 21 - 22, but sessions will also be accessible online. The preliminary agenda is available here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11193&qid=298741 . This agenda will also be complemented with the side sessions. You can find on Insite https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11194&qid=298741 an overview of the different side sessions CCC members and partners are organising and the main sessions they're speaking in. If your session is not listed, please reach out to Muriel: muriel@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11195&qid=298741 . * Join the webinar on perspectives on corporate accountability from South and Southeast Asia tomorrow, December 19th, including perspectives on mandatory Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (mHREDD). The webinar will take place in English via Zoom from 4:30 - 6:00pm (IST) // 4:45 - 6:15pm (NPT) // 6:00 - 7:30pm (ICT). For other time zones and to register, click here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11196&qid=298741 .
D7: Building the Network Leverage and Power
* On December 7th, the PMEL subgroup organised the annual webinar "GSF in Action" where the WIGS, the Regional Coalitions and the International Office presented their operational plans for 2024. We are looking back at an inspirational webinar and looking forward to seeing the plans and collaborations unfold in 2024. In this folder on Insite https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11213&qid=298741 , you'll find the presentations of the CCC collective entities, and the link to the recording https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11214&qid=298741 . * If anyone is planning to attend the Cornell University Global Labor Institute conference in Feb 2024 in New York, please contact Liz Parker from the Just Transition WIG (liz@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11224&qid=298741 ) and Giuseppe Cioffo, Lobby & Advocacy Coordinator at the CCC's International Office (giuseppe@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11225&qid=298741 ) to enable coordination among Network members and partners. * Organizing for Power's Core Fundamentals is running an intensive training programme led by Jane McAlevey, from May 9th to June 13th, 2024. This is a free six-week intensive training programme for all groups of 10+ organizers. It's all about organizing for change, and winning over people who don't already agree with us. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Urgent Appeals
* Applications are welcome for the Urgent Appeals fund for case coordination 2024 before January 18th, 2024. This fund covers staff costs to allow organisations in the network to free up a staff member's capacity to spend up to 1 day per week on the coordination of Urgent Appeals case groups. Please read all about it here https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11197&qid=298741 . Contact Noa: noa@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11198&qid=298741 if you have any questions or need any kind of support.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reported Incidents
* Tracking the industry: CCC IO is tracking specific incidents, violations and protests https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11199&qid=298741 that are in the public domain relating to FoA, safety, gender, factory closures, layoffs and wages from across the garment supply chain from textile production to textile disposal and recycling. For example, 33 fires across the textile value chain from cotton yarn to recycling centres were reported in India between September and November. The incidents are recorded in a searchable spreadsheet for you to use. Although the spreadsheet is view only, you can still set up a filter by going to Data => Filter views => Create a new temporary filter view. Please tell us what you think of this log of public incidents. Is it useful? Do you have recommendations to improve it? Email report-violations@cleanclothes.org https://crm.cleanclothes.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=11200&qid=298741 .
